Reverse Poacher in Wyoming Gets Jail Time and Fines

Like sticking your hand into an active beehive to get a taste of honey, a Wyoming man got exactly what he bargained for after attempting to free a bobcat from a legally set trap.

Last November, Wyoming resident Adam Roich stumbled across a live bobcat ensnared in a trap. In addition to succumbing to a slew of injuries during the rescue attempt, he couldn’t let the opportunity to let the world know about his good deed go to waste.

Posting on his Facebook account, Roich implicated himself by brandishing his war wounds from the altercation along with images of the bobcat. It didn’t take long before someone took notice of his unlawful activities and reported it to Game and Fish officers. Despite removing the post, a little bit of detective work allowed game wardens to place him at the trap site.

Roich ended up pleading no contest to the charges of unlawful release of a furbearer from a trap, maintaining that it was the animal who was really to blame.

“This cat jumped on me and chewed me up pretty good. It took everything I had to get control of this bobcat,” he said. “During this process, I was able to free the cat from the trap as I really did not know what else to do in the situation.”

For all his heroic work, he was hit with a three-day jail sentence and $1,000 in fines and legal fees. Roich is also ordered to maintain a healthy 500-yard distance from any legally-set traps.
