The tale of deer leaping through school windows is becoming all too familiar of a story. Just last week we reported on a young whitetail jumping through the window of a New Jersey Middle School and now we have another window-jumping whitetail, this time in Saskatchewan.
The incident took place at around 5pm at a St. Brieux, Saskatchewan school, located about 170 kilometres northeast of the city of Saskatoon. The deer jumped through the window of the school’s Grade 5 classroom, surprising the school’s principal, who heard the glass breaking and quickly shut the door of the room. The deer was then safely quarantined until conservation officers were able to arrive.
“It’s not something that happens every day,” said Kevin Garinger, director of education at the Horizon School Division told CBC News.
When the officers arrived, they promptly tranquilized the animal and removed it from the grounds to later be released into the wild.
“We’re very, very thankful that no children were involved in the situation,” said Garinger. “We didn’t have to worry about their safety.”
Garinger and other staff members remain baffled as to what would have caused the deer to cross the highway, run across the school’s field and finally leap through the window.
“We have no idea,” Garinger said. “We do know that there’s a lot of wildlife in the area. About three weeks ago, we had a moose that went through the town.”
