Nothing ruins a good mood like the internet, unending traffic jams or a bear clamping down on your arm while you lay in a hammock.

In a rare event, the latter is what happened last weekend at a campsite in Colorado. After a day in the great outdoors, a camper was taking in the last bit of the evening in a hammock at his campsite along the Purgatoire River in southern Colorado.

In between his restful breaths, he noticed a rustling sound coming from behind him in the woods. With the dark of night upon him, it was difficult to see what was happening. With a flick of his headlamp, he was greeted by a startled black bear who happened to be right beside him.

The bear clamped down on the man’s upper arm but quickly released it and scampered off into the woods. While the injuries were not life threatening, the camper got himself to a nearby motel where he was able to call an ambulance.

He was transported to hospital and treated for his wounds.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife was made aware of the attack and deployed a search team to dispatch of the animal. As per Colorado’s policy, any bear that attacks a human is deemed a threat and is euthanized if captured.

While the camper’s wounds were not fatal in nature, CPW has set a trap and deployed dog teams in an attempt to locate the mood-killing culprit.
