It was announced yesterday that President Trump, in keeping with one of his campaign promises, decided to donate his first quarter presidential earnings to the National Park Service.
“The president has spoken with counsel and made the decision to donate his first-quarter salary to a government entity,” press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters.
The check, made payable to the service in the amount of $78.333.32, was presented by Spicer to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. According to The Hill, Zinke went on to note that the money was earmarked to help preserve and maintain some of the country’s historic battlefield sites.
“We’re going to dedicate it and put it against the infrastructure of our nation’s battlefields,” Zinke said. “We’re about $229 million behind in deferred maintenance on our battlefields alone.”
If you recall, as part of President Trump’s campaign, he vowed not to accept a salary if chosen as Commander in Chief. While the Constitution requires the president to be paid, Trump announced that he would give the money away instead.
