64-Year-Old Maine Woman Punches Bear Square in the Nose

If a bear gets knocked out by a 64-year-old in the woods, does it make a sound?

When it comes to our pets, there’s no telling the ends some folks are willing to go to. When it comes to bear encounters, where many would run away and leave Fluffy to defend for herself, that was not the case for one Maine woman who refused to be pushed around.

While tending to her garden earlier this month, she heard the terrorized cry from her beloved dog in the woods behind her home. Jumping up to investigate, 64-year-old Lynn Kelly saw her dog running towards her with a black bear in pursuit. Doing what any crazy sensible person would do, she squared up to the bear and landed a jab directly to the animal’s nose.

“When the bear stood up, she stood up as tall as she could, then punched the bear in the nose, whereupon the bear bit her in the right hand, puncturing her wrist,” the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said.

Luckily, the animal released Kelly’s wrist from its jaws and retreated back into the woods, likely to re-evaluate its position in life. She was treated for minor injuries, while her dog escaped the encounter unscathed.

Maine wildlife officials took the time to remind residents not to get in between dogs and aggressive bears.

But for those of us like Lynn Kelly and many others who still have a fight left in them, we applaud you.
