Oregon State Police Presented with Infrared Imaging Unit to Battle Poaching

After raising $4,500, the Capital and Mid-Williamette chapters of the Oregon Hunters Association presented the Oregon State Police’s game enforcement unit with an infrared thermal imaging camera.

Similar infrared units have been used recently by other game enforcement agencies and are currently being used in Africa’s Kruger National Park in the fight against the poaching of the park’s rhinoceros.

These cameras give officers the ability to effectively see at night and spot potential poachers or their prey. The data derived from these cameras will undoubtedly aid as irrefutable evidence in the prosecution of those violating the laws surrounding hunting in the state of Oregon.

The Oregon Hunters Association raised the money for the camera unit through membership donations and from the proceeds of the association’s annual Blacktail Classic Banquet held at the state fair grounds each spring.
