Controversial Coyote Hunting Contest Returns to Alberta

coyote-in-corn-field

The death threats have returned to an Alberta man who goes solely by the name of Paul, to protect his family from harassment.

This Saturday will mark the fifth coyote hunting contest he has hosted in Alberta, where it is legal to shoot coyotes on private land with landowner permission, no license or permit required. Despite the legality of this organized activity aimed at merely a little friendly competition, Paul has come under fire on social media. Blatant death threats on social networks or through other means have unfortunately become the norm for anglers and hunters, as many prominent names in the outdoor industry have reported similar treatment.

Despite the negative press, the contest has grown substantially in popularity over the past couple of years. The 2014 edition saw a total of 22 hunters take part in the contest, while last year, Paul had 38 teams register to take part in the event.

The contest runs for one day only and hunters are instructed to take their hauls to designated checkpoints for verification, complete with dated mouth blocks. The totals are then tallied up and the winner is announced shortly after sunset on Saturday evening.

While everyone may not agree with the event itself, the fact still remains. This event is safe, well organized and operates completely within the confines of the law.
